$10 Starbucks Card

28 Oct
*This Contest Is CLOSED*

Well I was hoping to have a week long giveaway for my birthday that is friday….yes halloween. So it looks like this is on a roll, and what better week to have it then the week of the blog carnival?! isn’t this thing amazing. I can’t tell you how many entries I’ve put out but I hope to win some great stuff. Now’s the time to start stocking up for the holidays. Also, it’s gotten quite cold here. There were even SNOW flurries today that thankfully didn’t stick to the ground. So in the sprit of that I’m giving away a $10 gift card to Starbucks out of my own pocket for this giveaway.

It’s going to be an easy entry. The thinking of fall and the holidays reminds me of all the good times we had spending the holidays at my grandma’s house full of family and how much I took that for granted (My grandma passed away on May 2nd, 2008 of Full Body Cancer at the young age of 68), so in the spirit of that here is how to enter.

Rules:

  • Leave a comment telling me your favorite memory and if there is a smell or sound or something that easily triggers that favorite memory
  • If your address is NOT on your blog/profile please leave it in the comment so I can reach you if you win. No email address anywhere means no entry.
  • This giveaway will run until Oct 31st at 11:59 pm and the winner will be announced on Nov 1st.
  • For extra entries; follow me on the blog, add my button, follow on twitter, and/or subscribe to my feed. Please leave a separete comment for each thing you do.
  • The winner will be picked at random by random.org

My favorite memory is Thanksgiving at home. Mom would start the turkey in the early AM (no bags then lol) and we would wake to the awesome smells of the holiday. We would watch the Macy’s parade a visit with cousins while the adults cooked ( I miss those days for I am the cook now). Such happiness and love fill those memories especially of those that are not with us now. pkost2@falcon1.net

One of my favorite memories is of my grandma making hot chocolate for me and sitting at the table drinking it with her. I’ve never been able to make hot chocolate that tastes the same, but every time i have a cup or smell it, I think of her. I’m so sorry for your loss! Losing a grandmother is so painful and I hope you’ll be able to find some peace this holiday season. utgal2004 at yahoo dot com

Your post jogged a memory of my own grandmother. We used to have Thanksgiving at her small house when I was young, and I always sat at the “kid’s table” in the kitchen. As each kid got older, they graduated to the dining room. My Grandmother became ill when I was still very young, and passed away when I was in 9th grade. I never made it to the dining room table 😦Please enter me, thanks!

A memory I have of my Grandma is associated with the taste and smell of tea. Whenever you visited her she always the first thing she did was give you a cup of hot tea as soon as you arrived. Even kids. She just put milk in it. I can’t drink tea with out thinking of her.david_colleen@mei.net

When I smell cinnamon, I inevitably think of all our applebutter making! 🙂 We always did it at my grandma’s house in a big kettle over a fire, and I loved it.

  22. Janelle October 28, 2008 at 5:56 pm #

This one is easy because I have so many great memories with my grandparents! Yes, we did take all the great times for granted, sad to say. We always would go to her house for Christmas Eve and since I can remember she ALWAYS made her own Potato Soup and Oyster Stew. I’m not much on the Oyster Stew, but LOVE the Potato Soup. Nobody has ever come close to making soup like her and that smell brings all those Christmas Eve’s flooding back to bring a tear to my eye.janelle.miller12@gmail.com

My favorite memory is the first year we were married, poor as could be (30 years ago!) and we were in our tiny apartment, when the snow started falling. We looked out the windwo (we were on the second level of an old victorian house that the lady rented out) and the snow was laying and sparkling in the street lights. It was sooooooo quiet. We were just silently soaking up the beauty when all of a sudden we hear a distant “HO!HO!HO!” And then silence again. My husband and I just looked at each other, wide eyed like little kids. It was just great, that one moment in time when you felt like maybe you should have a little more faith and just BELIEVE! 🙂True story! We remember it often at the holidays and it warms our hearts!

I have a lot of good memories, so it’s hard to pick one. With cold weather coming up on us, I remember the late fall/ early winter sessions when we made Christmas ornaments with my mom. She made some stencils from pictures in coloring books, got these very thin sheets of styrofoam, glue, and lots of little decorating like sequins, shiny bric-a-brac and such, some kind of paint that we kids could also use (I don’t remember what: maybe like model paint). She would spread it all out on the kitchen table and patiently teach us how to do a lot of stuff like painting and cutting carefully. Her creations looked more beautiful to me than anything you could find in the store. She gave us a lot of latitude when we wanted to be creative on our own, so some of the pieces looked a little strange. It was such good time for us to be together and bond. Made our trees quite cheerful for years and years, and every time we put the ornaments up, we had special memories go through our heads.

When I was 4, my mom made me a special pink guitar cake. I can still remember the taste of the fluffy pink frosting so vividly – we had all of my family around, and it was a perfect day.

Whenever I smell lilacs it brings me back to my childhood. I would lay on my bed reading wonderful books and get lovely breezes blowing through the window carrying the scent of the lilac bush into my room. I just loved it, and it always brings me back when I smell it.

We used to go apple picking and to the circus with our neighbors when I was younger. We’d eat so many apples during the day. I’m surprised I never ate a worm.

  112. Melissa October 30, 2008 at 1:50 pm #

Comments on another giveaway made me think of Norah Jones music…which reminded me of my first summer in Baghdad. I lived “alone” (no one else _in_ the house, but plenty of security and others outside and in other houses) and would spend the summer evenings on my roof with a bowl of cut up watermelon, the internet, and Norah on the CD player. Those were happy days for me and I miss them, even though my current life (wife, mommy to 1 with another due in just over 7 weeks, and a would-be astronaut) is fabulous.I’m also craving a hamburger from a place down the street from my Baghdad house. Very frustrating.

My Yankee Peppermint Cocoa candle reminds me of Christmas. I bought it 3 Christmases ago a few weeks after my daughter was born. Every time I light it I think of that Christmas. I save it just for lighting around this time of year to get me in the holiday mood now.

My favorite memory is the last Christmas before both of my parents passed away 25 years ago. Mom had been very sick with cancer, and I think she knew she would die soon. She always made Christmas very special, but that year she was so excited and seemed to enjoy everything about the season even more than usual.

  118. Jessi October 30, 2008 at 6:01 pm #

Since we are just days away from Thanksgiving, memories from this holiday are the ones I remember the quickest. I remember how my Mom would wake up super early to get the turkey in the oven and then move onto baking the pumpkin pie (yum-my favorite). Then we would eat as a family–one of the very few times that Dad was able to join us. The day after Thanksgiving consisted of some shopping as well as putting up the Christmas tree. As a family, we would spend time reminiscing about the story attached to the special ornaments (birth, vacation, etc) before hanging it on the tree.I hope to be able to bring this childhood family tradition to my young (and growing) family one day.The only particular scent associated with this memory is Pumpkin Spice…smelling just like a freshly baked Pumpkin Pie. Mmmmm.

Wow, picking just one is hard. But I love remembering my graduation from junior high. My dad got all dressed up in his nicest shirt and pants, my mom wore a DRESS! Mind you, they don’t go anywhere and didn’t really go to school concerts or things like that. But they did go to this and my high school graduation. And took pictures with me, it was so nice! And I can still smell my dad’s aftershave! Old Spice!

  120. Trista October 30, 2008 at 6:19 pm #

Nothing special, but the smell of an apple candle IMMEDIATELY makes me think of past Christmas’. Please pick me!

My favorite memory is waking up on a cold winter morning to the sound or my grandfather clanging around putting wood in the stove so my gramma could get breakfast started in a warm kitchen. Running downstairs to the kitchen since there was no heat upstairs and the kitchen was alwys warm. then breakfast was a real breakfast: Jonnycake with homemade butter and maple syrup (grampa mad the syrup), bacon from their pigs, fresh eggs and toast made from homemade bread toasted over an open lid on the wood stove spread with freshly made butter and milk fresh from the night before’s milking. Sounds unhealthy but my grampa lived to 95 and gramma is still going strong at nearly 102.Sometimes we had to eat in shifts since the table only sat 8. gpet789@verizon.net
